MASA is the highest independent scientific institution in Macedonia, which organises, conducts and supports fundamental, developmental and applied transdisciplinary research.

MASA collaborates with universities, scientific institutions, scientific societies, and academies of sciences and arts, worldwide. It is a member of the Association of European Academies (ALLEA), the International Union of Academies (UAI), the Mediterranean Academy, the Inter Academy Panel (IAP), the International Council for Science (ICSU), and the Inter Academy Council of the National Academies of South East Europe (IACSEE).

The Academy acts as a hub for coordinating and implementing innovative activities, between the scientific institutions and the government, regarding research and policy towards a sustainable R&I ecosystem.

The scientific work at MASA has been funded by various funding agencies including, but not limited to, the Macedonian Government; the US Government through the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the Office of Naval Research; NATO; UNDP; the European Commission through TEMPUS, FP6, FP7, Horizon 2020 and IPA; the German Academic Exchange Service; the German Research Foundation; and agencies from Spain, Italy, Hungary, Hong Kong, Russia, China, among others.
